Geriatric Behavioral Health
Westview Hospital's Geriatric Behavioral Health Center is an inpatient mental health program that helps older adults deal with the stresses of life brought on by aging, loss of their spouse and friends, and the fear they can experience as our changing world seems to be leaving them behind.
The Geriatric Behavioral Health Center supports the emotional and physical needs of the patient and their family in coping with the challenges of aging.
Program Overview:
The Geriatric Behavioral Health Center providess inpatient diagnostic and treatment services for persons 65 years of age and older. Program components include:
- Psychiatric evaluation
- Individual and Group counseling
- Therapeutic programming
- Occupational therapy
- Medication management
- Family therapy
- Recreation therapy
Patient Referral:
Physicians, mental health professionals, or family members may make referrals to the Geriatric Behavioral Health Center by contacting us directly at 317-920-7540. The patient, if clinically appropriate after evaluation, will be admitted by our psychiatrist for inpatient treatment.
Patient Assessment:
The initial assessment is free and is conducted by a professional. The confidential assessment may include pre-admission telephone screening and/or personal evaluation.
Warning signs that may indicate the need for treatment include:
- Depression
- Suicidal thoughts
- Disorientation
- Decreased memory
- Hallucinations
- Increasing social withdrawal
- Sleep and appetite disturbances
- Loss of interest in daily activities
- Feelings of helplessness and hopelessness
Family Support:
The patient's family is considered an important part of the treatment team and is encouraged to participate in family conferences, discharge planning, and family therapy sessions when needed. This is an effort to ensure that the patient's progress and accomplishments are maintained by the new living skills learned in the program. Opportunities include:
- Patient/Family conference every Tuesday at 9am with Dr. Arnold.
- Family support group - Wednesday from 5pm-6pm
Professional Support Staff:
A team of healthcare provides cohesive, high-quality care to each patient. Specially trained to deal with the unique needs of older adults, this multi-disciplinary support team includes:
- Psychiatrists, Psychologists, and primary care physicians
- Therapeutic recreation specialists
- Occupational and Physical therapists
- Registered nurses
- Clinical social workers
- Pharmacists
- Dietitians
Insurance Coverage:
Hospital treatment service for patients who qualify for admission are covered by Medicare and most major health companies.

Visiting Hours:
Monday through Friday from 6pm to 8pm
Saturday and Sunday from 2pm to 8pm
